Similar Chinese Characters with the Same Pronunciation and Different Meanings

Chinese language has similar characters with the same pronunciation and different meanings. Here the examples:

1a. 清(qīng) distinct

b.青(qīng) green

Example:

他(tā) 色盲(sèmáng), 分(fēn)不清(bùqīng)青色(qīngsè)和(hé)蓝色(lánsè)。

2a. 理(lǐ) to tidy up

b.里(lǐ) inside

Example:

豆豆(dòudou),帮(bāng)妈妈(māma)把(bǎ)房间(fángjiān)里(lǐ)的(de)东西(dōngxi)整理(zhěnglǐ)一下(yīxià)。

3a. 啦(lā) (onom.) sound of singing

b.拉(lā) to play (a bowed instrument)

Example:

她(tā)一边(yībiān)拉(lā)大提琴(dàtíqín)一边(yībiān)唱(chàng)啦(lā)啦(lā)歌(gē)。

4a. 到(dào) to arrive

b. 倒(dào) to pour

Example:

我(wǒ)昨天(zuótiān)坐(zuò)长途车(chángtúchē)回(huí)娘家(niángjia),到(dào)车站(chēzhàn)才(cái)记得(jìde)没(méi)带(dài)水(shuǐ)喝(hē),幸亏(xìngkuī)有人(yǒurén)倒(dào)水(shuǐ)给(gěi)我(wǒ)喝(hē)。

5a. 薪(xīn) salary

b. 新(xīn) new

Example :

一(yī)看(kàn)到(dào)我(wǒ),老板(lǎobǎn)就(jiù)主动(zhǔdòng)谈(tán)起(qǐ)新人(xīnrén)薪水(xīnshuǐ)高(gāo)的(de)问题(wèntí),问(wèn)我(wǒ)有(yǒu)什么(shénme)想法(xiǎngfǎ)。

6a. 史(shǐ) history

b.使(shǐ) to make

Example:

俗话说(súhuàshuō):历史(lìshǐ)使(shǐ)人(rén)明智(míngzhì), 诗词(shīcí)使(shǐ)人(rén)灵秀(língxiù), 数学(shùxué)使(shǐ)人(rén)周密(zhōumì)。

7a. 式(shì) style

b. 试(shì) to try

Example :

你(nǐ)可以(kěyǐ)试试(shìshi)这里(zhèlǐ)的(de)美式(měishì)炸鱼(zháyú)和(hé) 中式(zhōngshì)红烧鱼(hóngshāoyú)。

8a. 狮(shī) lion

b. 师(shī) teacher

Example :

老师(lǎoshī), 这(zhè)是(shì)狮子(shīzi)还是(háishi)老虎(lǎohǔ)?

9a.由(yóu) because of

b.油(yóu) oil

由于(yóuyú)棕榈油(zōnglǘyóu)库存(kùcún)下降(xiàjiàng),棕榈油(zōnglǘyóu)价格(jiàgé)将(jiāng)上涨(shàngzhǎng) 百分之(bǎifēnzhī)十(shí)。
