Homophone in Chinese – Part 3

Here you continue to learn Chinese different characters with same pronunciation but different meaning. Because of many homophone characters in Chinese, it is not enough if Chinese learners just learn about Chinese Pinyin.

1a. 禁食(jìn​shí) to fast

b. 进食(jìn​shí) to take a meal

Example:

我(wǒ)今天(jīn​tiān)开始(kāi​shǐ)禁食(jìn​shí),这(zhè)是(shì)我(wǒ)第一次(dì​yī​cì)禁食(jìn​shí)祷告(dǎo​gào),可是(kě​shì)现在(xiàn​zài)饿(è)不了(bù​liǎo)了(le)。可以(kě​shì)进食(jìn​shí)吗(ma)?

2a. 进士(jìnshì) one who has passed the final imperial exam

b. 尽是(jìnshì) completely

c. 近视(jìn​shì) myopia

d.今世(jīn​shì) this life

Example:

近视(jìn​shì)尽是(jìnshì)今世(jīn​shì) 进士(jīn​shì)是(shì)什么(shén​me)意思(yì​si)?

3a. 鲜(xiǎn) few

b. 显(xiǎn) prominent

Example:

朝鲜(cháo​xiǎn)电影(diàn​yǐng)显(xiǎn)疯狂(fēng​kuáng​)。我(wǒ)疯狂(fēng​kuáng​)喜欢(xǐ​huan)看(kàn)。

4a. 长(zhǎng) to grow

b. 掌(zhǎng) palm of the hand

Example:

我(wǒ)手掌(​shǒu​zhǎng)长得(zhǎng​de)小(xiǎo)能(néng)弹琴(tán​qín)吗(ma)?手(shǒu)小(xiǎo)的(de)朋友(péng​you)都(dōu)有(yǒu)这样(zhè​yàng)的(de)疑问(yí​wèn)吧(ba)。

5a. 佳(jiā) beautiful

b.家(jiā) family

Example:

我们(wǒ​men)佳(jiā)家(jiā)在此(zài​cǐ)停止(tíng​zhǐ)售卖(shòu​mài)奶酪包(nǎi​lào bāo),我们(wǒ​men)也(yě)推出(tuī​chū)了(le)玫瑰(

méi​guī)巧克力(qiǎo​kè​lì)饼干(bǐng​gān)。

6a. 店(diàn) store

b. 电(diàn) electric

Example:

当(dāng)我(wǒ)经过(jīng​guò)时(shí),看(kàn)到(dào)他(tā​)站(zhàn)在(zài)电店(diàndiàn)里(lǐ)看(kàn)着(zhe)直播(zhí​bō)球赛(qiú​sài)。

7a. 盖(gài) cover

b. 概(gài) approximate

Example:

快餐店(kuài​cān​diàn)盖饭(gài​fàn)大概(dà​gài)多少钱(duō​shǎoqián)一份(yīfèn)?在(zài)店(diàn)吃(chī)10(shí)元(yuán),带走(dài​zǒu)吃(chī)15(shí​wǔ)元(yuán)。
