Chinese Idioms (Chengyu) and Meanings – Part 12

Here you will continue learn some Chinese idioms:

1.偷工减料(tōugōngjiǎnliào) to skimp on the job and stint on materials

Example:

在(zài)冷盘(lěngpán)中(zhōng)如果(rú​guǒ)少(shǎo)了(le)豆芽(dòu​yá)，客人(kèrén)会(huì)觉得(jué​de)偷工减料(tōugōngjiǎnliào)吗(ma)？

2. 当之无愧(dāngzhīwúkuì) it’s entirely worthy (idiom)

Example:

她(tā)当(dāng)老婆(lǎo​pó)，是(shì)当之无愧(dāngzhīwúkuì)的(de)好事(hǎo​shì)。

3. 出人意料(chūrényìliào) unexpected

Example:

一对(yī​duì)夫妇(fū​fù)出人意料(chūrényìliào)地(de)结束(jié​shù)了(le)婚姻(hūn​yīn)，亲友们(qīn​yǒumen)不(bù)敢(gǎn)置信(zhì​xìn)。

4. 分道扬镳(fēndàoyángbiāo) lit. to take different roads and urge the horses on (idiom), separate and go different ways

Example:

他们(tā​men)俩(liǎ)夫妻(fūqī)为什么(wèi​shén​me​)分道扬镳(fēndàoyángbiāo)？

5.目中无人(mùzhōngwúrén) to consider everyone else beneath one

Example:

他(tā)怎么(zěn​me)目中无人(mùzhōngwúrén)了(le)？你(nǐ)没(méi)见(jiàn)过(guò)他(tā)吧(ba)，他(tā)以前(yǐ​qián)不是(bú​shi)这样(zhè​yàng)的(de)。

6. 无忧无虑(wúyōuwúlǜ) carefree and without worries

Example:

在(zài)同龄(tónglíng)孩子(hái​zi)无忧无虑(wúyōuwúlǜ)的(de)玩耍(wánshuǎ)时(shí), 而(ér)我(wǒ)却(què)要(yào)练习(liànxí)钢琴(gāng​qín)。
