Chinese Idioms (Chengyu) and Meanings – Part 11

Here you will continue learn some Chinese idioms:

1. 推陈出新(tuīchénchūxīn) to push out the old and bring in the new

Example:

我们(wǒ​men)每星期(měixīng​qī)推陈出新(tuī​chén​chū​xīn)的(de)中西(zhōng​xī)美食(měi​shí)已(yǐ)创造(chuàng​zào​)出(chū)百(bǎi)种(zhǒng)以上(yǐ​shàng)口味(kǒu​wèi)。

2. 雨后春笋(yǔhòu chūnsǔn) bamboo shoots after a spring rain

Example:

这些(zhè​xiē)年(nián)，许多(xǔ​duō)地方(dì​fang)电视台(diàn​shì​tái​)像(xiàng)雨后春笋 (yǔhòu chūnsǔn)般(bān)办(bàn)起来(qǐ​lai)了(le)。

3. 门当户对(méndānghùduì) the families are well-matched in terms of social status

Example:

我们(wǒ​men)是(shì)门当户对(méndānghùduì)的(de)一对(yī​duì)夫妻(fū​qī)。我(wǒ)和(hé)他(tā)都(dōu)是(shì)初恋(chū​liàn)，成长(chéng​zhǎng)教育背景(jiào​yù​bèi​jǐng)相似(xiāng​sì)，我们(wǒ​men)俩(liǎ)的(de)性格(xìng​gé)爱好(ài​hào)也(yě)差不多(chà​bu​duō)。

4.青出于蓝(qīngchūyúlán) to surpass one’s master or teacher in learning

Example:

你(nǐ)已经(yǐ​jīng)超越(chāo​yuè)她(tā)，青出于蓝(qīngchūyúlán)了(le)。

5. 大街小巷(dàjiēxiǎoxiàng) great streets and small alleys

Example:

大家(dà​jiā)吃(chī)过(guò)炒(chǎo)年糕(nián​gāo)、米(mǐ)肠(cháng)、鸡肉(jī​ròu)串(chuàn)吗(ma)？据我所知(jù​wǒ​suǒ​zhī)，这些(zhè​xiē)食物(shí​wù)以前(yǐ​qián)只能(zhǐ​néng)在(zài)大街小巷(dà​jiē​xiǎo​xiàng)的(de)路边摊(lù​biāntān)上(shàng)吃(chī)到(dào)的(de)。
